The Best Used Pickup Trucks To Purchase in 2020

Trucks are still the bestselling vehicle in America today. They work hard, they play hard and have the best towing and payload capacities of anything on the market. Pickup trucks are getting more expensive with each passing model year.

While some affordable new trucks are still out there, your budget might not allow for a big spend. Try looking into purchasing a used truck as there are some great deals to be made.

1. Ford F-150

As the best-selling vehicle in America, the Ford F-150 is a great starting point for anyone looking for a used truck. Buyers wanting 4-wheel drive have fewer options to choose from, with only around 300 current-gen F-150s listed for around $20k. Buyers wanting a higher trim level can look to the F-150’s previous generation, offered from 2009 to 2014.

2. Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is known for its dependability and ruggedness, which means it holds its value quite well. Still, buyers browsing for used pickups can find one from the 2012-2015 model years for around $20,000 with relative ease, and there are currently almost 350 listed on Autotrader that would work for this budget, 250 of which come with 4WD. The 2012-2015 Tacoma was offered in single, extended and crew cab configurations, although the single-cab model was discontinued for 2015.

3. Honda Ridgeline

The 2014 Honda Ridgeline combines a carlike ride and roomy, SUV-quality interior with towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds in a practical truck with excellent reliability and resale value. Only one engine is available on Ridgeline. It’s a 3.5-liter V-6 making 250 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing is a stout 5,000 pounds. The 2013 Ridgeline models received the backup camera as standard, which’ll improve livability inside a city. A 122-inch wheelbase also helps with overall maneuverability.

4.Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado is a fuel-efficient midsize truck with available tech features like Apple CarPlay and a comfortable interior. Three engines are available in the Colorado. At the low end is a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder putting out a humble 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. The more desirable gas engine is the optional 3.6-liter V6, which churns out a respectable 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a unique 2.4-liter 4-cylinder diesel option, good for 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, allowing for a maximum towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds when properly equipped.

5. Ram 1500

This Ram 1500 offers the smoothest ride and some of the nicest interiors in the full-size truck segment. While it offers similar capability to its competitors from Ford and GM, the 1500 has long offered slightly elevated styling and road presence when compared to the other mainstream full size trucks on the market. The Ram 1500 also offers a variety of unique trim levels like the Night, Outdoorsman, Hydro Blue Sport and Harvest editions, which help to further differentiate it from the competition.

6. Toyota Tundra

The Toyota Tundra is on our list of best used trucks under $20,000 for its combination of capability and reliability. The Tundra is another truck with great resale value, and combined with the fact that it isn’t as popular as alternatives from Ford, General Motors and Ram, buyers looking for a used Tundra for under $20,000 will have fewer options to choose from than the segment sales leaders. Luckily, the Tundra has been around virtually unchanged since the 2007 model year. Over these years, while a smaller 4.6-liter V8 was also available, the Tundra was available with a potent 5.7-liter V8 making 381 hp.

7. GMC Sierra

The primary way that the GMC Sierra differentiates itself from its more mainstream corporate twin, the Silverado, is through its offering of the upscale Denali trim level. Positioned above any of the Silverado’s trims, the Denali offers nicer exterior styling thanks to the addition of lots of chrome, along with nicer interior materials. The Denali can also be had with a high-performance 6.2-liter V8 putting out 403 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque.

8. Nissan Titan

As it isn’t as popular as the other full-size pickups on the market, the Nissan Tundra is a great value, making it an excellent under-the-radar option for anyone looking for a capable truck on a budget. Introduced in 2004 and sold through 2015, the original Nissan Titan offered a potent 5.6-liter V8 engine making 317 hp and a towing capacity of up to 9,300 pounds.

9. Nissan Frontier

The Frontier is one of the more modern pickups buyers can afford on a budget of around $20,000. A brand-new base model 2019 Frontier with 4WD and the smaller extended cab comes in at $20,035, making it the only new truck currently on sale in the $20,000 range. The current-generation Nissan Frontier has been around since 2004 with only slight updates along the way. Compared with a new truck, the 2013 Frontier SL trim lacks a rearview camera. The rest of the midsize truck is virtually the same. It has navigation and automatic climate control.

10. Ford F-250 Super Duty

If you need a solid work truck with more capability than a traditional half-ton, you’ll need to move up to a heavy duty. The Ford F-250, powered by a 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 engine, fits the bill. The V-8 produces 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. The towing capacity is 12,500 pounds, nearly double the F-150 V-8 in our previously recommended Ford.
