Light Trucks (SUVs, Vans, & Pickups) have experienced a surge in demand, outselling cars for the sixth straight year – jumping nearly 8% year-over-year to nearly a 69.2% market share. As trucks increase in popularity - manufacturers have increased the number of offerings, trim-levels, and tow capacities available in each segment. Although this leaves the consumer with a plethora of information to dig through and countless options when hitting the lot to go shopping, it can quickly become overwhelming – so we’ve come to the rescue!

If your in the market for a truck, we’ve complied a list of the largest factors to consider when making your purchase.

  1. Pick Your Power – if your getting to understand the powertrain options that run under the hood, you’ll probably notice that every truck on the market has multiple engine options. Your grandfather may have always told you that a true truck can only come in 4x4 with a V8, however the reality has become much different. With the introduction of turbo motors and new technology, smaller engines are now able to do the work of larger motors. The largest factor to consider is, will you be towing? If so, you may want to consider a diesel motor, which will provide the added torque and fuel economy necessary to handle larger loads.

  2. Size Matters – the open cargo bed of a truck makes them easy to identify, however there are many variations, which can make your truck best suited for its job. Will you be constantly filling your bed with cargo and lumber or taking guests to the airport? These questions can help find the right cab and bed size for your needs. Certain trucks like a Toyota Tacoma or Ford Ranger are often smaller and have limited towing capacities, but can cost significantly less than a full size option. The higher the classification, the better the towing and hauling capabilities will be. Light duty trucks are typically the most practical choice for individuals.

  3. On A Budget – the first thing anyone shopping for a truck may notice, is the huge window of prices that come along with this segment. While the cheapest mid-size trucks can come in under $25,000, some of the most expensive models can set you back over six figures! While manufacturer incentives and low financing rates can make some of these currently more affordable, its typically better to outline your needs and budget before you start shopping. Simply selecting popular options on a vehicle can quickly drive the price up as they are often accompanied by other trim packages. Conversely, a base model package may come with vinyl flooring and non-power equipment, know what you need. Due to the broad spectrum of pricing, research your model and request a special build pattern that can help make sure you get the perfect truck for your budget!
