Getting Your Car Ready for Back to School

Let’s Get Ready!

Here are the steps we recommend you take to get your car ready to head on back to school:

  1. First things first, wash your car.

Not only is it important to maintain the exterior but it will also make your ride look amazing. Remember, dirt, debris, dust, and caked on contaminants will damage your car over time.

  1. Equip and maintain your windshield.

Make sure that your car is geared for safety by performing some basic checks. Start with your windscreen: when last did you change your windscreen wipers? Your windshield wipers need to be able to drive in all weather conditions. While you’re at it, make sure to fill up your windshield wiper fluid.

  1. Have the cooling system checked.

One of the main reasons you may have to take your car in, or a potential reason you might find yourself stranded on the side of the road, is problems with your car’s cooling system. To make sure you are always prepared, visit an auto technician to have your cooling system checked before school starts. The technician will be able to alert you to any issues with both the cleanliness and the level of coolant.

  1. Check your tires.

Flat tires or worse, stripped tires, are an absolute no go. In a literal sense, it will leave your car immobile, difficult to steer, and difficult to stop, meaning you won’t be able to get to where you need to be safely. Have your tires checked to ensure against under inflation, wear and tear, and any potential issues with the condition of your tires. Make sure to check the spare tire too!

  1. Get an oil change.

All vehicles require oil. The frequency of your oil change will depend on your car, especially in terms of age. Older vehicles may require a change as frequently as every 3000 miles. Modern engines can regularly go 5000 or even 7500 miles between changes. Oil changes are easy to forget once you get busy to make sure to have it checked ahead of the school semester.

  1. Does your car have an emergency kit? Get one, or have your existing one restocked.

Accidents happen. Be prepared for any curve ball by making sure that your emergency kit is properly stocked. Remember to write down or print a physical copy of your emergency contacts as well as part of your kit! Feel free to include instructions on how to handle emergencies such as who to call first from your list or your preferred auto body shop. Make sure you include your insurance information as well.
